The filibuster can be a political tool (at least, that’s what I was taught in 8th grade history) in that once a person has the floor, he/she has the floor until he/she yields it, “as long as they are speaking” they have the floor, and a quorum must be maintained during said filibuster, or the Senator may sit down, and demand quorum..
Yes, they can read from a newspaper, the Bible, and even recite Cheech and Chong skits…good times.
The current record is held by Strom Thurmond, at 24 hours, and change, back in ’57.

The Demonrats only complain about the filibuster when they can’t get enough votes to pass some hideous brainchild spending bill because the Filibuster rules, more importantly than jawboning on the Senate floor, requires 60 votes to pass key pieces of legislation. ‘Course when they’re in the minority they use it to their advantage to block Republican sponsored legislation.
They’re also kind of pissed off that Manchin and Sinema won’t vote for their Green New Deal spendthrift package and rightly so. I don’t think that either of them is holding out for some pork for their state either. I think they’re genuinely against some of the really egregious items in the bill.

That’s the whole premise of the filibuster. It gives the minority party a means of throttling the majority party. That’s why it needs to stay. When the GOP was trying to do this I was against it as well.
